Hung up in Marco

Friday, March 2, 2012
Left Snook Bight Marina for Marco Island.
The wind was at 8-10 kts directly out of the South so had to motor all the way down.
Was pleasant and uneventful. Took about 6 hours.
Dropped the hook in Factory Bay, an anchorage just off the Marco River.
Plan to stay till Sunday afternoon. There is a low pressure cold front moving through around noon with 30 mph winds. We will try to leave just after the front passes. Supposed to have 18-20 mhp winds decreasing to 10-15 out of the north. Should blow us right down to Key West. But it will be about a 20 hour trip so that means sailing at night. A first for us. Let you know how all that works out.

Had strong winds all day Saturday and gusty big time last night. The front came through early, about 8:00am with 30 mph winds. Stayed in the mid 20's through the afternoon. And the seas, out in the Gulf, are like 8' – 10'. So.........We're not leaving for the Keys till tomorrow.

Monday, March 5, 2012 - Marco Island
Still here. Actually we're at the dock at Rose Marina on Marco.
Planned to be leaving for the keys today but last night, while running the generator, we fried the water pump. Not sure why it happened but we smelled the belt burning and turned it off right away. I checked it out and found the water pump on the generator's engine was seized up. Bummer. Called in and docked this morning at Rose Marina. Then when we hooked up our electric we're getting “reverse polarity” on our shore power. So now we can't charge our batteries. There is absolutely no reason for the power problems. All was working fine 2 days ago. Gremlins are striking early. So it's almost 1:00pm and we're waiting for the mechanic. Double bummer.

Later that day.
Well we found out what caused the shore power issue. Penny remembered the 2 breakers in the aft cabin that protect the power coming into the boat. Flipped it on, and all is well. This boat has too many dam breakers in it. Still waiting for the mechanic on the generator though. Told he'll be here tomorrow.
Went for a bike ride and stopped at the grocery & licquor store. Found this really cut burrowing owl on the way.

He way in a vacant lot between houses and they built a little stick and string fence around him with a post not to disturb. They are endangered and protected and no one can build on that lot as long as that owl is there.

Here's some marina pics.
